My First Lipid Panel…

My First Lipid Panel…

This morning I received a message from my new doctor with the results of my lab tests from last week.  Here is the rundown:

Fasting Blood Sugar = 105  (cutoff for normal is 100)

A1C = 5.6%  :)

Total Cholesterol = 174

HDL (“good cholesterol”) = 40

LDL (“bad cholesterol”) = 102

Triglycerides = 158

I am so happy with this A1C number.  5.7% is where the diagnosis of pre-diabetes begins, so I came in a little under that.  The A1C measures my average blood sugar over the past three months, but from what I understand, the more recent levels have more weight in the calculation. Since I’ve been great decent about watching my sugar levels over the past month I have no doubt that my A1C was lowered because of this.

She also said that my triglycerides are borderline elevated.  The cutoff for normal is at 150. I need to do some research on how to best try and reduce this number.  From the brief amount I’ve read a reduced carbohydrate diet and exercise are two of the best ways.

She only said on the message that my cholesterol levels were “good,” but from a brief Google search it looks like my good cholesterol could be a lot better.  Levels under 40 cause increase risk for coronary artery disease. So I’m barely hanging in there.  It seems I need to lose some weight and exercise more to try and get this number up. Interestingly, from what I read the consumption of Omega -3 fatty acids can help with both the triglycerides and the HDL cholesterol, so the pills I bought for my dry skin might hopefully help here too.

Basically, what it comes down to is that I need to get rid of my belly fat.  I am one of those who carries it in the stomach rather than the hips/thighs, which is not good for the heart!   I wonder if I should stop using coconut oil…..hmmm….a topic for further research.

For breakfast I busted out the Mayan Blend Cereal again.  This stuff is so good.  I will definitely buy more if I can hunt it down.  Of course we also had scrambled eggs + beaters with a wedge of laughing cow cheese melted in.

Oooey Gooey Chocolatey Deliciousness……and speaking of chocolate I also had a Choffy latte.

2 Hour After Meal Blood Sugar = 135   This was under my 140 goal, but a little higher than I thought it would be.

I made yet another trip to the grocery store today on the way home from daycare (Safeway), primarily because I had a few coupons that I wanted to use which were expiring today.  When I got there I found a few good deals on juice so I stocked up.  I also found the orange creamcicle flavored seltzer water that was recommended to me to try with the whipped cream flavored vodka that I won in last week’s book club party white elephant.   I’ll have to try it out soon!!  :)

For lunch, I tried to re-create a salad from one of my favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara, Tupelo Junction.  They have this delicious fried chicken salad with cornbread, cranberries, pumpkin seeds, and buttermilk ranch.  I had a box of Jiffy corn muffin mix so baked the muffins when I got home from the store.  I’ve been thinking about making this salad ever since I bought that fried chicken on Sunday night.

1 Hour After Meal Blood Sugar = 112

The afternoon was filled with work and a few other miscellaneous tasks.  I was planning to take the kids out to shop for some new sleep sacks for Rio after daycare, so I thought we would eat while we were out.  Nick requested a quesadilla, so we ended up at the ever delicious Senor Taco.  I had the carnitas plate.  I didn’t eat a whole lot of the beans and rice, but I did eat a good part of a large tortilla!  Rio shared all of my food and also had a little bit of Nick’s quesadilla.

Tonight Nick worked diligently on this lego zoo.  He came over to get me and said “Mommy I have a wonderful surprise for you!” He did a great job!

I feel like I have a million little things to do and I’m going to try to stay up late a get a few done.  While typing this up I just watched last night’s episode of The Voice…..I still think I’m pulling for Terry McDermott.  I like them all though!

Goodnight all!
